CORE vs NationBuilder

Built by community.
Not by a corporation.

NationBuilder is a solid product. But it’s a for-profit, US-hosted, closed system that charges you for features that CORE includes as standard. Here’s how they compare – honestly.

Two strong platforms.
One clear difference.

CiviCRM – the organising engine at the heart of CORE – was released in 2006, specifically designed for non-profit, non-governmental, and advocacy groups. It is free, open-source, and used by over 11,000 organisations worldwide including the Australian Greens, Amnesty International, Wikipedia, and CERN.

NationBuilder launched in 2009 as a for-profit product and is used by around 9,000 organisations. It is a capable platform – but it is a closed system, US-hosted, and charges separately for features that CORE includes out of the box.

As with any software, success depends on how well it is configured, integrated into your processes, and supported by your team. CORE is designed to make that as easy as possible ` deployed in minutes, with no consultants required.

Core Features

The fundamentals – contacts, fundraising, events, and communications. This is where most platforms look similar on paper, but the details tell a different story. CORE includes everything in this section as standard, at every tier.

Feature CORE (WordPress + CiviCRM) NationBuilder
Contact & Relationship Management Unified database for individuals, organisations, groups, and relationships. Smart groups, tags, membership management, and automated drip emails. Free from zero to hundreds of thousands of contacts. Similar – depends on subscription tier.
Fundraising Online donation forms, payment processing, contribution tracking, gift acknowledgements, peer-to-peer fundraising, and real-time donation dashboards. Improved but limited flexibility for categorisation or real-time dashboards.
Payment Platforms Stripe, PayPal, bank transfer, Eway. Stripe only.
Donation Fees No platform fee. Standard Stripe/Eway processing fees only. Domestic: 1.70% + $0.30. Integration with Xero and MYOB included. Additional 1.5% platform fee per transaction on top of standard processing fees.
Event Management Online registration, ticketing, attendance tracking, calendar integration, QR codes, automated reminders, and name tag printing. More limited.
Email & Communications Mass mailing, A/B testing, segmentation, campaign management, and the ability to reply to supporters directly within the CRM. Basic – advanced features require higher tiers.
SMS Fully integrated inbound and outbound SMS. Multiple numbers configurable. Under 2¢ per SMS. USA/Canada only as standard. Australia requires add-ons at ~5¢ per SMS.
Volunteer Management Fully integrated. Tracks the journey from supporter to volunteer to key stakeholder. Add-on via SupporterBase – ~$1,700 additional cost.
Automation & Workflows CiviRules – complex, multi-step triggers across mail, events, volunteers, and donations. Premium version and external consultants only.
AI & MCS Integration Full API and webhook access. Plain-language AI tools can automate many tasks. No.
Reporting & Analytics 40+ standard reports, custom report builders, and real-time dashboards. Similar – limited with the basic version.

Campaigning Tools

This is where CORE really pulls ahead. Door knocking, booth manning, mapping, and on-the-ground logistics are all built in – not bolted on. NationBuilder handles most of these through separate external systems with no native reporting.

Feature CORE (WordPress + CiviCRM) NationBuilder
Door Knocking & Route Mapping Integrated into signup and rostering – with full reporting. Separate system – no reporting in NationBuilder.
Roadside Events Integrated into signup and rostering. Separate system – no reporting in NationBuilder.
Booth Manning Integrated into signup and rostering. Separate system – no reporting in NationBuilder.
Mapping & Geolocation Fully integrated. Visualise volunteers across the electorate, track corflute distribution, plan local activity. Premium only.
Membership Management Flexible membership management with online sign-ups, renewals, and payment plans. Premium only.
Case Management Manage and track constituent workflows and cases via CiviCase. Similar.
Resource & Room Booking Integrated booking for resources and rooms. No.

Integrations & Customisation

CORE is built on WordPress – the platform that powers over 50% of the world’s websites. That means a vast ecosystem of plugins, developers, and community support is available to you. NationBuilder uses Liquid, a proprietary templating language that requires specialist skills and keeps you locked in.

Feature CORE (WordPress + CiviCRM) NationBuilder
CMS Integration Seamlessly connects with WordPress. Standard Astra/Elementor page builder. Native CSS. Uses Liquid – outdated, limited support, specialist skills required.
SEO Native SEO with Yoast, Google Tags, and more – pre-installed. Custom only.
Online Shop Full WooCommerce integration for merchandise, goods, and services. Custom only.
Financial Reporting Full reporting across donations, sales, and events – integrated into the CRM. Connects with Xero and MYOB. Pro or Custom tier only.
Third-Party Integrations Open system – connects with financial, marketing, and productivity tools. New integrations can always be built. Custom only. Closed system.
Customisation Highly customisable with open-source flexibility – tailored workflows, custom data fields, bespoke extensions. Pro or Custom tier only.
Mobile Access CiviMobile – view and update profiles, manage activities on the go, even offline. Pro or Custom tier only.
Internal Community BuddyPress – private social network, groups, messaging, and activity feeds for your members. No.
Self-Service Portals Supporters can update their own details, manage memberships, and access resources. Custom only.
Project Management Integration with Zephr project manager. No.
Social Media Multiple integrations connecting directly into CiviCRM and WordPress. Pro or Custom tier only.

Deployment & Hosting

CORE is hosted in Australia, deployed in minutes, and comes with everything a community group needs out of the box – email, DNS, security, and compliance pages included. NationBuilder is US-hosted by default, and most of these services cost extra.

Feature CORE (WordPress + CiviCRM) NationBuilder
Hosting Amazon ECS – Australian servers. Industrial-strength, bank-level trusted hosting. Hosted in the USA. Optional Australian hosting available.
Deployment Time Up and running in 5 minutes. Standard signup – more customisation required for community groups.
Website Deployment Standard WordPress – most groups have skills in-house. Pre-built with all standard pages including privacy, terms, and conditions ready for Australian compliance. Uses Liquid – requires specialist support and external consultants.
Email System Full open-source email system included. Unlimited domains and mailboxes via bundled MXRoute. Volunteers can keep personal and organisational accounts separate. Not included. G Suite or Office 365 required – 10 mailboxes can easily cost $100+/month extra.
DNS & Domain Services Full managed DNS via Cloudflare and Amazon. Complexity removed at initial deployment. Email forwarding included. Additional cost, or not provided.
Backup & Security Daily backups available for download. Weekly “Doctor” report – flags excessive access, logs cyber attacks, and snapshots activity. Backup: unknown. Security reporting: nil.

Training, Support & About

CORE is open-source and community-backed – support comes from people who actually use the platform, not from a paid helpdesk. And because the codebase is open, new features arrive continuously from a global developer community, not from a corporate product roadmap.
